Amazon targets Brazil to open first streaming office outside US

This will be the fourth office worldwide and the first outside US. The main goal is to support all South American streaming operations.

  • Amazon to open office in Rio de Janeiro, since it’s streaming service is growing stronger in Brazil
  • Amazon’s streaming offices were, until then, located only in US cities: Los Angeles, Seattle, and Miami.
  • In January, the company had already announced its first in-house fulfillment and delivery network in São Paulo, Brazil

E-commerce and tech giant headed by Jeff Bezos moves on with its expansion strategy into Brazil. After announcing, in January, the opening of the first in-house fulfillment and delivery network in South America, with a 47,000 square meter (505,904-square-foot) warehouse located in São Paulo, Amazon now targets Brazil with another of their services: streaming

Based in Rio de Janeiro, Amazon Studio’s new office will be the first out of the US. Nowadays, Amazon streaming services operations were based only in LA, Seattle, and Miami, according to Brazilian newspaper O Globo.

More than managing all licensed streaming productions that are available in Brazil, the new bureau will also be in charge of supporting all South American operations regarding streaming services.

According to a source of O Globo, Amazon Prime Video has been growing significantly in the country. The company’s entry in a market where other players, like Netflix and Globoplay, are already operating, might increase competition.

As well as these other players, Prime Video – commercial name of Amazon’s streaming -– is a subscription service that also has its original shows – like Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, from Gilmore Girls’ creator Amy Sherman-Palladino; Homecoming, starred by Julia Roberts; and The Man In The High Castle. Now, with an office based in the country, it’s expected that Amazon’s streaming also starts to produce its own Brazilian shows – something that Netflix has already been doing in the country.
