Latin American media powerhouse Globo Group has launched its over-the-top service Globoplay in the US market this Sunday, 19, as reported by Variety. Available for $13.99 monthly through Apple and Google apps and Samsung smart TVs, the streaming platform collects over 500 titles among library classics and original shows.
“We have a relationship dating back over 20 years with the audience that watches our channel in the United States, which is also the country with the largest community of expatriate Brazilians, over 1.4 million in the U.S, according to statistics from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” said Raphael Corrêa Netto, Globo director of international businesses, to the media outlet.
“We want to be closer to this audience, providing a more comprehensive content offer with more consumer freedom.” The executive clarified that the company intends to launch Globoplay in regions where it already has channels, such as the US’ case.
The premium SVOD service has launched in Brazil in 2015 and currently draws 22 million unique visitors per month, positioning the streaming platform as the biggest in the Brazilian market, with big hits such as the soap opera Brazil Avenue (Avenida Brasil), and original productions like Aruanas, Harassment, and Iron Island. In 2019, Globoplay launched eight original productions and plans to reach sixteen in 2020, with productions developed at Estúdios Globo as well as in co-productions with Brazil’s independent sector, said Globo director to Variety.
Although very popular in its native country and with a long presence in international markets, especially in the US, Globo will find great competition in the American streaming market, once the sector is currently booming in the country with the increasing entry of new players such as Disney+, Apple TV+, NBCUniversal’s Peacock and other platforms yet to launch.
