The Chinese giant Huawei confirmed – in a significant gesture – that it will open a new factory in Brazil for the assembling its smartphones. The branch, which will absorb $ 800 million in investments between 2020 and 2022 and will be based in a to-be-determined city of the state of São Paulo.
According to information in the newspaper Valor Econômico, the investment has as its primary objective to prepare the company for the auction of 5G mobile phone technology, which will take place in March of next year.
Also according to the newspaper, the future Brazilian factory will serve as the main facility for the production of its smartphones in Brazil and the rest of South America. Currently, Huawei has an optical fiber communications branch in Sorocaba, São Paulo, and another branch focused on support infrastructure for telephone operators in Manaus (AM), where it employs close to 2 thousand workers.
The company sees Brazil as a strategic market to continue expanding, in the midst of conflict with the United States, and, more specifically, with the American president, Donal Trump. Recently, Huawei struck several deals for the installation of 5G technology in Russia and South Korea.
