Uber starts to offer debit card in Mexico

“Uber supports the extension of financial services in the country", said Federico Ranero, Uber Mexico’s general manager

  • Drivers from Mexico City, Monterrey, Puebla, Merida, and Guadalajara will be the first to use it
  • It will be possible to open a bank account trough Uber app

The Uber payments expansions continue. In a partnership with Mastercard and BBVA, the giant is now launching a debit card for drivers in Mexico.

Uber supports the extension of financial services in the country”, said Federico Ranero, Uber Mexico’s general manager, according to Reuters. This is the first time the company offers this kind of card outside of the USA. Besides Mexico City, Monterrey, Puebla, Merida, and Guadalajara will get the option. Later on, the whole country will have it.

For the drivers, the good news is that won’t be any commission to use the card, according to Carlos Lopez-Moctezuma, head of open banking at BBVA. The initiative is another movement from Uber to give access to an unbanked population, like the one in Mexico.

One of the main results about the partnership with BBVA is that drivers will get to open an account through the Uber app, without going to a bank, according to Lopez-Moctezuma. Besides the transport transformation, Uber is clearly investing in a big change in financial service. As said by Ranero in the event that announced the debit option, “Uber supports the extension of financial services in the country“. Is safe to say that is just the beginning of that expansion.
