From one Latin American to another? A Mexican may lead WTO: Jésus Seade

From one Latin American to another? The WTO (World Trade Organization) closed yesterday the official registry of candidates to lead the organization, and among the eight applicants to occupy the position is the Mexican Jesús Seade, Mexico’s Deputy Foreign Minister for North America and the leader of the negotiating team of the T-MEC agreement, reports Expansión.

The current Director-General of WTO, the Brazilian Roberto Azevêdo will leave his position on August 31st. Seade and the Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-Iewala are among the favorites to lead WTO, says the media outlet.

The Mexican economist was the deputy general director of the WTO between 1996 and 2008. The Mexican economist was previously deputy general director of the WTO between 1994 and 1998, also held a board position at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and worked at the World Bank.

Besides Ngozi Okonjo-Iewala, Seade’s competitors are the Egyptian Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh, Moldovan Tudor Ulianovschi, the South Korean Yoo Myung-hee, the Kenyan Amina C. Mohamed, the Arab Mohammad Maziad Al-Tuwaijri and the British Liam Fox.
