The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released on Wednesday (28) the official estimate of the population in the country: 210,147,125 inhabitants.

The figure shows a slowdown in the pace of population growth in the country, as the increase from 2018 was 0.78%. By July of last year, the same comparison had revealed a population growth of 0.82%.
Data from the agency, published in the Federal Official Gazette, also reveals that the Brazilian population–as well as the world population–remains highly concentrated in urban centers. More than half of the population lives in 324 Brazilian municipalities. Also according to the IBGE, 17 Brazilian cities today have more than 1 million inhabitants.

São Paulo remains the most populous city in Brazil, with 12.25 million inhabitants–a year earlier, that number was 12.18 million. Right behind is Rio de Janeiro, with 6.72 million residents.
