Apple is working on a payment system via QR Code and bar codes for its Apple Pay platform, according to information found by 9to5Mac in the source code of a trial version of iOS 14. The function is still being developed by the iPhone maker and is unavailable for users.
According to the website, Apple is developing a tool to carry out transactions using QR Codes and bar codes. The new transaction method should work through Apple Wallet and will allow payments to be made through cards registered on Apple Pay by simply pointing the iPhone camera at the code. The service will also be able to generate QR Codes for third-party applications.
The transaction method, however, is not yet available to users and the company has not disclosed any date to launch it. But it is certainly a new signal that Big Techs are vying to enter the payment industry, coming a few weeks after Facebook‘s attempted release of WhatsApp Pay in Brazil, which is still pending authorization from the country’s Central Bank to be resumed.
