A Chinese giant overtaking an occidental big-tech–the same old story, just a different day. But in this story, Baidu and Google are playing key roles. From 2018 until now, smart speakers have become one of the biggest bets of tech companies and, while it is leading the global market, Baidu has overtaken Google and reached second place, according to Venture Beat.
The Chinese company is in a constant growth curve during Q1, the company gained the third position in this market by exceeding two other Eastern companies: Alibaba and Xiaomi. Last June, the company launched a low-pricing version of its product called Xiaodu, which costs 7 times less than the key model.
By selling only in China, Baidu achieved a growth of 3,700% in smart speakers in a year-on-year comparison, unlike Google, which has decreased by 19.8%, reaching 4.3 million units sold in 2019 Q2, against the 5.4 million sold during the same quarter in 2018.
