  • Amid a skyrocketing growth on the videoconference tools usage – with Zoom leading the way – Facebook is now launching a new feature to its video chat software, Messenger Rooms, by letting users broadcast via Facebook Live;
  • Calls on Messenger Rooms are limited to 50 people and work with a sharable link. No Facebook account is required to join the call and the host can remove users from it if needed;
  • What now has changed is that calls on Rooms broadcasted via Facebook Live could have the same audience size that any other live broadcast posted by this same host.

Facebook announced this Thursday that is introducing an additional feature on its videoconference tool Messenger Rooms. From now on, users will be able to broadcast that Rooms chat to Live, the feature on Facebook that allows broadcasting through Groups, Pages, and timelines on users’ Profile section.

“Whether you’re hosting a book club with friends, interviewing a panel of experts, teaching a fitness class, or broadcasting with your friends for fun, going live from a room lets you interact with audiences of any size,” said Facebook in a company press release.

The novelty is that now, calls on Messenger Rooms broadcasted via Facebook Live could have the same audience size that any other live broadcast posted by this same host.

“Create a room that can go live right from Facebook or Messenger web, and invite anyone to join, even if they don’t have a Facebook account. As a room creator, you can broadcast your room to a Profile, Page or Group, and invite people to tune in,” says Facebook. Image: Facebook Newsroom

By bringing Messenger Rooms and Facebook Live together, we’re unlocking new ways for people to connect and create content even while they’re apart.

Facebook stated in a press release

According to the company, Live broadcasts from Pages doubled in June on a YoY comparison, largely attributed to broadcasts since March 2020. Facebook says the new feature is rolling out in some countries on Facebook and Messenger web starting today, and it will soon expand to all countries where Messenger Rooms is currently available. “We’ll continue to add enhancements over the coming months,” it further stated.
