Nintendo raises Switch sales forecast to 24 million units

The company also increased its operating profit forecast by 50% to 450 billion yen ($ 4.3 billion)

Nintendo announced on Thursday that it expects to sell 24 million units of the Switch video game console in the year ending March 2021, which corresponds to an increase in the previous forecast of 19 million.

The company also increased its operating profit forecast by 50% to 450 billion yen ($ 4.3 billion), as games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons brought new users to Switch, which has been on the market for four years.

From July to September the company’s operating profit more than doubled compared to the same period in 2019, to 147 billion yen.

Nintendo said it sold 12.6 million Switch consoles in the first half of the fiscal year, including 8.4 million of the version that can be used as a home console and 4.2 million of the Switch Lite portable variant.

Sony and Microsoft launch their next-generation consoles next week, which should expand the competition faced by the Switch.

Last week, Sony executives said demand before the launch of the PlayStation 5 exceeded the company’s expectations, prompting the company to raise its performance forecast for the year.
