This Tuesday the e-commerce platform Shopify has launched Shop, a mobile app designed to operate as a shopping personal assistant. The launch is another step towards the diversification and complementarity of the company’s business, a quality highly valued by investors.

Since the beginning of the year, Shopify’s share price has grown by 70%, and now the platform is the second-largest Canadian company by market capitalization, and it’s now bigger than other e-commerce players such as eBay and Etsy.

“We’re proud to present online shoppers with a seamless, intuitive way to shop while helping them support local businesses,” said Carl Rivera, general manager of Shop, in the company’s post.

Shop is an evolution of other tested Shopify features, such as Shop Pay and Arrive, an app created by Shopify in 2017 for tracking packages, and that has already been used by 16 million consumers since then, according to TechCrunch.

The idea is for the app to help its users throughout their shopping journey: from discovering new products to ordering their favorite brands, as well as tracking packages until they arrive home.

Shop also has a feature for local businesses, with the geolocation of the user’s favorite neighborhood stores, and offers options for flexible pick-up or delivery options. The user receives recommendations based on his preferences and purchase history to give him more of what he want, less of what he doesn’t.

The number of merchants using Shopify is growing rapidly. They were less than 200,000 in 2013. Today, they are more than 1 million, in 150 different countries.

According to the company, Shop will be available in other languages soon, as well as other Shopify’s markets, including Brazil – in a second phase, still without an exact date, the application will be located in Portuguese and will include Brazilian merchants.
