Streaming services unite to promote actions supporting Blackout Tuesday

The online campaign protests against police violence and racism as honoring George Floyd

Amazon, Apple Music, Spotify and YouTube Music united to promote actions in support of Blackout Tuesday, the online campaign aimed at protesting police violence and racism and honoring George Floyd.

As first reported by The Verge, the streaming services will focus on special playlists and podcasts and moments of silence and social media blackouts. Spotify added an 8 minute and 46-second moment of silence to select playlists and podcasts on the platform, the same period of time that the former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned Floyd down by the neck with his knee.

Apple Music’s regular Beats 1 radio programming has been cancelled 9toMac reports and it is instead promoting a streaming station that celebrates music produced by black artists.

The Verge points out that its regular recommendation and radio tabs are showing a single playlist called ‘For Us, By Us’. There’s also a full page takeover that’s being shown to some users, featuring a message of support for the protest movement. However, users can still access their music libraries and Apple Music catalog as normal.

Amazon Music said that in solidarity with the Black community such as colleagues, artists, songwriters, musicians, producers, and music listeners, the company will observe Black Out Tuesday to listen, learn, and find more ways we can act in the ongoing fight against racism. It paused all social media for the day.

YouTube Music also said it stands in solidarity agains racism and violence. Previously, YouTube pledged to donate $1 million to the Center for Policing Equity.
