The surge of edtechs: when streaming meets education

Streaming for educational purposes is on the rise, and search for video classes and training programs might increase by 18 percent in 2019

Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Goon-demand streaming has been on the spotlight for quite a time now, attracting more and more followers each time a new season, show or movie is released by these online platforms. But the entertainment industry is not the only one that has been enjoying a good time with the streaming technology: digital education is also betting on it.

Frosy & Sullivan Consulting pointed out that the search for educational and training streaming content will increase by 18% in 2019 and reach a revenue of up to $40 bi until 2022, in a global scale.

Called edtechs – merging education and technology – those startups are being boosted by such positive market movements. As disclosed by Brazilian media outlet Meio&Mensagem, according to a survey called Mapeamento EdTech, 2018, launched by the Brazilian Association of Startups (Abstartups), there’s an exponential growth of study programs through digital platforms, such Open and Distance Learning (ODL). In 2018, ODL has increased by 15% in Brazil, while traditional graduation programs increased by only 4%.

Bernardo De Padua, CEO and co-founder of Brazilian startup Quero Educação, talked about a technique called Blended Learning to Meio&Mensagem, method that mixes on-site classes with classes by video streaming. According to him, this is a big market trend that will spread not only in Brazil but all over the world.

There are plenty of growth opportunities for startups in this industry, nowadays the largest concentration of edtechs is in the production of content aimed at teachers and schools. That’s 60%. However, there are other layers of this market still to be explored“, explained Honorio to Meio&Mensagem. Among the main advantages, streaming technology allows updating the content in real-time, besides making it easier for the student/user to access such contents, that can cover a lot of knowledge fields, from personal development to career coaching and many others.
