Google‘s video platform YouTube will soon launch a new format called Shorts to tackle competition against global hit TikTok, as first reported by The Information.
According to the media outlet, Shorts will be released inside YouTube’s interface as a new feature, rather than being a standalone app, in a YouTube’s effort to gain leverage with its existing audience.
Focused on small videos – the same model that made ByteDance’s TikTok so popular – the new feature will work in a feed format and it will take advantage of YouTube’s existing library of licensed music for soundtracks.
The information, who listened to two sources familiar with the matter, declared that this is the “most serious effort yet by a Silicon Valley tech company to combat the rise of TikTok.” Shorts is reportedly set to launch by the end of 2020.
According to Bloomberg, in March, ByteDance was preparing to launch a Google-like suite of office work tools.
