Big tech firms laid off 40,000 workers so far due to COVID-19

Part of the technology sector related to transportations, retail and food and consumer services have been suffering because of the pandemic, according to Bloomberg. The industry has cut more than 40,000 jobs so far.

Last month, it was even worse: in a single week in early May, Uber announced it would cut 3,700 positions, Airbnb said it would cut 1,900 and Lyft laid off more than 1,000.

However, as reported by Bloomberg, not all big tech companies have been hit by the pandemic. E-commerce giant Amazon, for instance, is adding 175,000 workers to help handle a surge in orders, while other tech behemoths, including Facebook and Apple haven’t made public any plans to cut jobs.
