According to the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper, the new variant of Sars-CoV-2, potentially more transmissible than the current version, detected in England and in several countries in Europe and Asia, has just been identified in Brazil.
The information was disclosed on Thursday by Dasa, a leading diagnostic medicine company in Brazil. The company says that it has already communicated the discovery to the Adolfo Lutz Institute and the Health Surveillance authority. The identification was made in partnership with the University of Sao Paulo (USP).
According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the new strain is estimated to be 70% more transmissible than the current one. But no evidence that it is more lethal.
However, UK health agencies, experts, and scientific authorities say that the new variant should not affect vaccines’ effectiveness that have been developed against COVID-19 so far.
