Brazilian enforcement of data protection law will be postponed

The enforcement of the Brazilian General Data Protection Law (LGPD) will be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The country’s Senate approved a bill that includes a rule changing the date in which the LGPD would become effective. Initially expected for August 2020, it will actually enter into force in January 2021.

The new bill must still be approved by the lower house of Congress and then be signed into law by President Jair Bolsonaro, a process that will likely be completed in the next few days.
