Coronavirus cases surge in Chile; Brazil broke the daily record of deaths

Despite having vaccinated 30% of its inhabitants, Chile is facing a COVID-19 cases peak, the country has a record of overcrowded hospitals. To contain the spread of the virus, the government established a lockdown policy this week that will affect 70% of the population.

According to O Globo, the main reason for the wave of new cases cited by experts is the easing of sanitary measures at a time when the immunization of the entire population is not yet complete.

On Wednesday, Chilean Senate and Executive will hold a joint session to discuss how to proceed in the elections of April 10 and 11, when the population will choose the constituents. The wording of the new constitution was decided in a historic plebiscite last year, summoned in the face of protests against inequality in 2019.

Meanwhile, Brazil once again broke the daily record of deaths from COVID-19 on Tuesday. For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic in the country, the number of deaths exceeded 3,000 in 24 hours. There were 3,251 deaths according to official data from the Ministry of Health.
