Latin America eyes São Paulo’s Coronavac vaccine

São Paulo government announced on Thursday the start of the Brazilian production of the Coronavac vaccine against COVID-19, developed by Brazil’s Butantan Institute in partnership with the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac.

Another 11 Brazilian states and 276 cities have already requested São Paulo to purchase the immunizer. According to Reuters, Butantan head Dimas Covas said several countries in the region, including Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Honduras are interested in buying the Coronavac vaccine from Brazil. Butantan is in advanced talks with Argentina about the vaccine supply, he said.

Results of Coronavac’s vaccine efficacy should be released on the 15th.

Also, the Brazilian Ministry of Health on Thursday confirmed the country’s first case of coronavirus reinfection. The patient is a 37-year-old doctor.
