Summer holidays will be affected by the corona crisis in Mexico according to Fematur, the Mexican Federation of Tourist Associations. As reported by Mexican media outlet Milenio, not only Easter holidays were impacted by the period of social isolation, but summer as well has suffered a decrease in the number of travelers of about 30 to 40% compared to the same season last year.
Fortunately, a part of the trips that were made for Easter could be transferred to Summer; some suppliers, hotels, and airlines were in solidarity with travel agencies to be able to change the dates; however, there will be no recovery.

Sectur, the Secretary of Tourism estimated that due to this health emergency, the arrival of travelers by air will register a decrease of 12.1% this year, to stand at 17.3 million. This drop will mean that 2.4 million tourists will stop coming to the country. Likewise, the agency indicated that the spending by foreign travelers for 2020 will be around 16,8 billion dollars, a 14.7% drop compared to 2019.
For Fematur’s president, the federal government in the country will need to launch a major promotion campaign at the national and international levels in order for the sector to start recovering, adding that companies will need several fiscal supports to survive the crisis, such as postponement of tax payments and social contributions.
