The data are from the media consortium, formed by G1, O Globo, Extra, O Estado de S.Paulo, Folha de S.Paulo and UOL, after the Ministry of Health changed the way of disseminating the information. These media outlets gather information directly from the country’s state health departments.

The 50,000 victims mark was surpassed just over three months after the first death, which occurred in the city of São Paulo. Since then, the disease has spread across the country and is currently advancing inland.
