Occupancy rate in Brazilian hotels drops to 9% in April

Hotel chains in Brazil have been operating since April with an average room occupancy rate of 9.4%, according to data from the Forum of Hotel Operators of Brazil (Fohb) reported by Valor Econômico.

March had an occupancy rate of 34.6%, according to the Fohb, which gathers 870 Brazilian hotels. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, in April, the hotel occupancy rate fell 83.5% compared to the same month of 2019. According to the forum, the drop in demand started in March, which forced hotels closing in April.

Around 65% of the hotels in the country are closed, and Fohb forecasts that average occupancy in the industry will stay at 20% to 25% in 2020, against 60% last year.
