Market research institute GfK registered in Brazil the first week with positive results for sales of electronics, after a month of contraction. According to an article on Valor Econômico, sales increased 2% between April 13 and 19 in a year-on-year basis.
was the jump in electronic goods sales registered in ecommerce, from April 13 to 19. Digital purchases sustained overall sales, offsetting declines in physical stores.
The performance in physical retail still shows a strong retraction, of 52.1%, over the same period in 2019. In the week of April 6 to 12, there was a 68% slump.
The recovery has been uneven, with the interior of the state of São Paulo (-26%) and the city of Rio de Janeiro (-11%) still registering strong declines while the city of São Paulo (+12%) and the Northeast region (+10%) show growth.
Fernando Baialuna, retail director at GfK, said that in April the lowest level in the consumer confidence indicator was reached. If this scenario persists for two or three months, there will be a negative impact on the disposition for new purchases, he told Valor.
